What We Do

We have supportive relationships and agreements with a number of veterinarians in Western Australia, who assess the horse if obviously injured or ill. Save Equus follows their recommendations.

The Save Equus Animal Welfare Team are experienced horse people and they assess every horse who comes into the care of Save Equus. Certain actions, such as worming, hoof work, teeth and special feed are carried out as a matter of course. The vet does the work on open wounds or any other immediate medical needs.

Our farrier, also a volunteer, works on the hooves. Then our Foster Carers take over, they are also volunteers. Their specialty is care, time, attention and a gentle hand. Not every intervention has a satisfactory outcome and Save Equus takes veterinary advice to end suffering. However, barring veterinary advice we achieve positive outcomes for every horse that has come into our care.

It may take 6 or 24 months but Save Equus makes a commitment to the horse to achieve a safe and secure home for them for the remainder of their lives. We provide medical care, hoof care, dental care, proper nutrition and shelter with startling success.

Our foster carers and the Animal Welfare Team provide the most significant input; gentle human/horse contact and specific remedial care planned by our Animal Welfare Officer. Once a horse is physically recovered our Animal Welfare Officer re assesses and re-trains with gentle training methods.
