How Interventions Work
We may get an email or a call, it maybe from a ranger or a concerned neighbour, “I just saw a horse that looks like a bag of bones. Can you do something?”
The Animal Welfare Unit in the Department of Local Government and Regional Development, the RSPCA and some authorised local government rangers have the power to enter a property and seize animals under the Animal Welfare Act 2002. Save Equus refers to these agencies when the seizure of an animal is warranted; we offer assistance and support and are bound by their judgement.
The Save Equus Animal Welfare Officer and the Animal Welfare Team undertake interventions. The attached document explains how the team works. Diagram Of Foster Carer Liason (PDF, 1 Page 230KB)
Save Equus takes considerable care to document and provide a clear line of evidence on all interventions. Not all interventions require the seizure of the horse, in fact often we provide education, advice on how to find farrier’s, equine veterinarians, equine dentists etc and also sometimes we provide feed – hard feed or a green paddock.
