About Save Equus

Save Equus is a horse rescue organisation, run by volunteers, which cares for and rehabilitates horses that have been abused and neglected.

Save Equus is an incorporated organisation and has a management committee which oversees its operation. The organisation has a constitution, and holds an Annual General meeting every year.

Save Equus operates in metropolitan Perth and in some areas of the south-west of Western Australia. Its members live all over the state of Western Australia, and all help and contribute to horse rescue.

Volunteers undertake most of the work in caring for the horses. Some specialist services such as veterinary care and farrier services are paid for as and when they are required. Horses of all types come into the care of Save Equus, and need specialised care and attention to recover physically and emotionally from the effects of cruelty and neglect. A horse's recovery and rehabilitation from past neglect involves a wide range of care, including good feed, veterinary care, behavioural training or re-education work, and sometimes just time to regain their trust in humans.

Our Animal Welfare Officers (AWOs) are also volunteers. These Officers are trained, experienced horse handlers, with the resources and knowledge required to assess the needs of abused or neglected horses and provide the treatment and care needed.

If necessary, a horse is placed with a Foster Carer, who invests in the rehabilitation process. After rehabilitation and foster care, Save Equus places sound and adjusted horses into new and lasting homes. Successful rehabilitation means a horse is whole, healthy and well-homed, and less likely to be neglected in the future. In this way Foster Carers contribute to the rehabilitation of many horses, not just one.

Members are vital to the organisation, not only in helping to direct and support the functions of Save Equus, but also in contributing to horse care, rehabilitation and fundraising. Anyone who is interested in the care and protection of horses is eligible to join, thereby collectively demonstrating how much interest and concern there is for horse welfare and rescue in Western Australia. Information on joining can be found under the "How to Help" heading on this website.
