Foster Caring and How It Works
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Foster Carer.
We welcome your participation in this volunteer effort to improve the situation of horses and owners in need in our community. By becoming a foster carer, you can provide a horse with the temporary help it needs to reach its full potential, under the professional and caring guidance of a network of advocates. Once rehabilitated through the foster care system, a horse may be adopted into another permanent home, where its new owners are supported by Save Equus to prevent the horse ever falling into neglect or cruelty again. In this way we hope to be able to help as many horses as possible and give them back their wings.
Foster Caring and Adoption
One of the most important and pivotal roles within Save Equus are those of Foster Carers and Adoptive Parents. With increasing numbers of rescue equines coming under our care, and our on going work with other key agencies likely to bring more, we need more of these important people.
Save Equus cares for many horses and ponies, all with differing needs.
With this in mind, we aim to place each horse in the foster home best suited to ensuring their well-being. Having a wide range of potential foster homes available, in a variety of locations, helps us to achieve this.
The basic requirements for someone becoming part of our foster care team are:
- That your property is inspected by us and found to be suitable.
- That your experience, skills and ideas are compatible and harmonious with the needs of the particular horse.
- That you and the particular horse interact well with each other and show potential for a positive future relationship.
Save Equus foster carers receive full support from Save Equus. In return, we ask our foster carers to:
- Submit a monthly progress report Keep a foster care diary/log (provided by Save Equus)
- Follow the program we have devised for the horse in their care.
We require short term Foster Carers, Emergency Placement Foster Carers, Long Term Foster Carers and of course the long term main aim is to place our equines into an adoptive family who will continue to care and love these very special equines.
