Foster Caring and How It Works

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Foster Carer.

We welcome your participation in this volunteer effort to improve the situation of horses and owners in need in our community. By becoming a foster carer, you can provide a horse with the temporary help it needs to reach its full potential, under the professional and caring guidance of a network of horse advocates. Once rehabilitated through the foster care system, a horse may be adopted into another permanent home, where its new owners are supported by Save Equus to prevent the horse ever falling into a poor situation again. In this way we hope to be able to help as many horses as possible and give them back their wings.

Our process works as follows -

SAVE EQUUS FOSTER CARER
Establish a relationship with Foster Carer. Allow "Meet & Greet" with Foster Care Co-ordinators at Foster Carer's property.
Save Equus horse arrives with professional assessment, and treatment plan for physical and behavioural needs. Provide safe environment for horse and be available for handover.
A care plan will accompany the horse to enable you to continue the rehabilitation process. Medical, feed or training will be included where appropriate. All aspects of the horse's care will be clearly defined and needs to be carefully followed.
Save Equus will also provide a basic foster horse pack which includes a rope halter, lead rope, fly veil, feed bucket, brushes, hoof pick and rugs where needed. Special needs will be catered for if required on a case-by-case basis. Foster Carers are required to cover basic feed costs for the horse and contribute the time needed for treatment and handling.
To aid recovery, a progress diary and monthly report forms will be provided for you to maintain. Foster Carers are required to complete forms and diary in a timely manner and report any changes to the Foster Care Co-ordinator to help asses progress and achievement of goals. Supply digital photos if possible.
We expect that all Save Equus members behave in a professional, caring, responsible and confidential manner. The Foster Care team will communicate promptly and effectively to promote the best interests of the horse in care.
