Save Equus thanks the students of Geraldton TAFE Equine Studies for their interest in Save Equus and the welfare of horses. The students and teachers recently spent the morning with members of the Save Equus Animal Welfare Team and Ballesteros a recently rescued horse in the care of Save Equus.

The Christmas wish tree promotion in the Europa stores Midland & Maddington is underway and the Christmas trees are decorated and in stores awaiting for donations towards our Emergency fund.

Please inform all your friends to go along to the store closest to them and donate but not to forget to fill out their name & contact details on the Christmas tag and place it on the tree as one lucky person will receive a gift donated by our sponsers which will be drawn in January 09.

Let’s see which store gets the most tags on their tree!!! Go Europa!!!

All money rasied from the Christmas Tree Appeal goes direct into the Emergency Fund to pay for those urgent items and treatment for Save Equus horses.

Our message is directed at people who are selling or rehoming horses, we want to inform you about Animal Hoarding and ask that you to be aware of the behaviour of hoarders when you are rehoming or selling your horse. The advertisement “free to good home” is very attractive to an Animal Hoarder so Save Equus urges you to give your horse a $dollar value and sell your horse for that $dollar value.

 
Save Equus also urges you to thoroughly investigate the person you intend to sell your horse to, so you are assured of their income, skill and capacity to care for the horse. Save Equus also urges you to sell your horse with a simple written contract that has provision for the horse to be returned to you if it is neglected or cruelty treated.

Animal Hoarding stems from a variety of causes and shows itself in different ways – it is a complex issue, as is all animal cruelty in our community. The work of Save Equus has been greatly assisted by the research of The Hoarding of Animal Research Consortium in America and acknowledges the following information is from the research of this Consortium.

An Animal Hoarder is a person who’s behaviour towards animals is driven by a their personal psychology. This also means hoarders display a number of psychological disorders including addiction. We describe the behaviour of hoarders below to increase your awareness and ability to recognise an Animal Hoarder.

ROCKET
Is a grey pony gelding. Rocket was saved as an isolated and withdrawn pony. He was severely head shy, his distain and mistrust clearly evident. He was averse to being ridden; in fact, he was assessed as fearful of humans on his back. Rocket has slowly developed in a gentle environment. His pony character has surfaced and he has a mutually rewarding relationship with the young niece of his foster carer. Rocket is accepting of her and he is being ridden for the first time in years.

PEPPER (and mini friend)
Is a thoroughbred mare who was saved from an RSPCA euthanasia order because of a damaged hoof.  Save Equus has spent considerable time with Farrier support to ensure Pepper’s hoof is now fully healed. Pepper was in racing training when saved and was averse to being ridden. She had been passed from one trainer to another in a short period of time and was not trusting of human contact. Pepper now has had a lasting and sound relationship with her current foster carer. Save Equus has subsequently retrained Pepper to saddle under the skill and expertise of Jayne Lavender.  Pepper has been in the care of Save Equus for 36 months and with the great dedication of her foster carer is being ridden with her willing participation.
