Our History
The organisation “Save Equus” was formed in 2005 to respond to equine welfare concerns that required a more focused and experienced response than existing animal welfare organisations had and were providing.
Save Equus was formed to apply to equines the provisions of protection and freedom from cruelty under the Animal Welfare Act 2002, and associated Acts and Regulations.
Over the past ten (10) to five (5) years investigation and review into the operation of animal welfare and application of animal cruelty prevention in Western Australia has highlighted a number of areas in need of improvement. In particular, the inequitable spread of animal welfare resources with the need for advocacy for equine welfare, cruelty prevention and rescue.
Save Equus was formed to go some way towards giving focus and priority to equine welfare and to provide practical and operational support to respond to equines in cruelty situations: removing, rehabilitating and and rehoming animals where possible.
Under these arrangements Save Equus is focused on bringing greater knowledge to equine care and rescue, as well as a wider range of facilities for rescue options. Careful attention is given to reduce duplication with other animal welfare jurisdictions and give greater transparency and accountability across the whole sector of animal cruelty prevention.
