TONTO is a very attractive 10 year old gelding pony who has been horribly frightened by people. He is very wary of people and has a patient foster carer who is taking the time he needs to change his understanding of human contact from cruelty to kindness. Tonto, nevertheless enjoys to company of other horses and ponies and is not cut off or distant from them. He has a playful nature and Save Equus believe with care and a gentle approach he will develop greater willingness to be near humans.

TAMMY
Is a Standardbred mare who was saved with Morgan Lee (Sally). Tammy was Veterinary assessed as not sound for ridding but appropriate as companion horse. She is a beautifully mannered mare who was successfully harness raced. She is currently in trial adoption as a companion horse.

ROCKET
Is a grey pony gelding. Rocket was saved as an isolated and withdrawn pony. He was severely head shy, his distain and mistrust clearly evident. He was averse to being ridden; in fact, he was assessed as fearful of humans on his back. Rocket has slowly developed in a gentle environment. His pony character has surfaced and he has a mutually rewarding relationship with the young niece of his foster carer. Rocket is accepting of her and he is being ridden for the first time in years.

PEPPER (and mini friend)
Is a thoroughbred mare who was saved from an RSPCA euthanasia order because of a damaged hoof. Save Equus has spent considerable time with Farrier support to ensure Pepper’s hoof is now fully healed. Pepper was in racing training when saved and was averse to being ridden. She had been passed from one trainer to another in a short period of time and was not trusting of human contact. Pepper now has had a lasting and sound relationship with her current foster carer. Save Equus has subsequently retrained Pepper to saddle under the skill and expertise of Jayne Lavender. Pepper has been in the care of Save Equus for 36 months and with the great dedication of her foster carer is being ridden with her willing participation.

Mimi

MIMI
Is a 3 year old Standardbred mare. Mimi was the foal of a mare under RSPCA order to be fed more to improve her condition. Unfortunately, Mimi’s mother was subsequently sent to slaughter. Mimi then developed with little training and rough handling. When handed to Save Equus, Mimi was in poor condition, uneducated and frightened of spacious paddocks, having lived in a sand pen for the bulk of her life. Mimi now loves the open spaces and has developed into a sweet and generous mare with a strong willingness to please. Mimi has been in foster care for 24 months and with her maturity has been trained to saddle by Save Equus under the considerable skill and expertise of Jayne Lavender. Mimi is being considered for an adoption trial to a new home that has hundreds of well covered acres for her to enjoy.

MORGAN LEE (SALLY)
Morgan Lee’s first foster carers have nick named her Sally after novelist Sally Morgan. Sally is a 5 year old Standardbred, around 15-16 hands high who was bred to harness-race. Sally, from all accounts was a gentle filly who came back from her harness training wary of humans, pregnant and with little training. She was then left to have her foal. When saved, Sally was wild, untamed, she was knotted, unkept albeit well fed. Save Equus took days to catch and handle her before she could be rescued. Save Equus has been in awe at the transformation of this mare; her very experienced foster carers have uncovered a stunning mare of outstanding conformation and wonderful nature. She is almost unrecognisable. Sally is with a second foster carer on trial for adoption to see if the fit is right. All signs are good, pictured above.

MAY
Is a Thoroughbred mare, her brand identifies her as from Lynward Park Thoroughbred Stud; she is 21 years old and has served a number of owners well. May is currently in treatment for a wound on her leg that has been untreated for some time. May’s condition was poor when saved. Her condition is slowly improving along with her health. May has required veterinary treatment and with better condition will need further veterinary treatment as well as her teeth and feet managed.

MAGGIE
Is a Mini Shetland mare. Maggie is currently a distant and reluctant miniature Shetland Pony. She has been well versed in rough handling and neglect and has applied her sharp mind to avoiding humans altogether. Her foster carer is patiently bringing this seasoned mare back into contact with humans and showing her a gentle touch and a warm hand. We are managing her feet and this rehabilitation will take some time. Save Equus will ensure all the time necessary is taken for Maggie.

Kiowa

KIOWA
A Palouse gelded pony, Kiowa was found unhandled, but after several weeks has become a soft and uncomplicated pony. He is around 13hh and approximately 4 years old. Kiowa’s neglected feet and teeth have required management by Save Equus and we are pleased to report that both are normal and perfectly healthy. Kiowa is being considered for trial adoption at the moment.

Bobby

BOBBY
Thought to be an orphaned Arab X, Bobby was neglected and heavily burdened by parasites, very thin when saved. He is approximately 11 months old, and quite easy to handle. Bobby was an isolated and distant horse when first received by Save Equus and we were concerned for him. Bobby’s rehabilitation subsequently has been heart warming for Save Equus and testament to his dedicated foster carers. He is now an engaging young horse and enjoys people and the company of other horses.
